Twenty-two POS companies sell into this market. Two of them publish a processing rate anywhere on their website.

The other thing we do

What’s your real rate?Most owners don’t know.

Your processing statement is written so you won’t read it. Send us your last three months of it. We’ll go down them line by line and show you what you are actually paying, with every fee named.

The teardown

Line by line, out loud

These are the line items from a real restaurant’s statement, with the merchant removed and the amounts changed. Forty-some lines, and only three kinds of charge. Watch them separate.

Interchange

This part nobody can change

Interchange and card-brand fees go to the card networks and the bank that issued the card. Every processor passes them through. On this statement they come to 1.92% of card volume.

The markup

This is the processor’s cut

One percentage and a per-swipe fee — the “plus” in interchange-plus. It adds 0.64% here, and it is the number worth talking about.

Everything else

And this is what got added

Support plans, portal fees, “enhanced security.” Each one small enough not to ask about. Together they add 0.42% — money that isn’t processing at all.

What happens

Three things, and two of them are ours

01

You send statements

At least your last three months, any processor. Photos of the pages are fine. That is the whole ask, and it is all we need before you know your number.

02

We build your menu

Every item, every modifier, every price. You look it over and tell us what we got wrong. That is your part — it is the piece owners dread, and it is not your job.

03

We install it and train your staff

We set it up, then train your staff on your floor, on your own system with your own menu.

One tap and it’salready in the kitchen

Tableside on the handheld · Send · the ticket lands on the pass. No paper, no walking it back, no re-keying.

The hardware

We sell two systems. We’ll tell you which one you want.

We carry SpotOn and Square. We did not build either one and we will not pretend we did — what we do is work out which one fits how your restaurant actually runs, set it up properly, and be here afterward.

We’re not locked to one box, so we have no reason to push you toward the wrong one.

Handheld
Order and take payment at the table, on the patio, or in the lane. SpotOn’s runs on Wi-Fi with 4G backup, so it keeps working out on the patio. Square’s runs on Wi-Fi.

Square or SpotOn

Both publish their rates. Almost nobody else does.

Here is the comparison a salesperson normally talks you out of. Every figure below is published by the manufacturer on its own website, and you can check all of it before you call us.

What Square does best

  • No commitment. Square publishes no contract and no cancellation fee — switch any time.
  • A strong offline mode. Switch it on and it keeps taking cards when the internet drops.
  • Hardware you buy outright. Published prices from a $59 reader to an $899 register, and it runs anything from one counter to a group of restaurants.
  • Chargebacks cost nothing. Square states it covers the dispute fee.

What SpotOn does best

  • One system, front to back. Counter stations, handhelds and a kitchen display working together.
  • Handhelds with 4G backup. Orders and payments keep moving on the patio, away from the Wi-Fi.
  • A lower published card rate as you grow. 2.45% + 15¢ on the Essentials plan, month to month.
  • Hardware can come at no upfront cost on a qualifying account — ask us how that works for your room.

Short version: both of them run a full restaurant. We ask how your room works first — how many stations, who takes orders where, what happens when the internet drops — then we tell you which one fits and why.

Training

We train your staff on your floor

A new system is only as good as the people using it on a busy night. So we don’t hand you a login and a video. We train your staff in your restaurant, on your own system, with your own menu already in it.

That is what a local team is for.

Before you call

What we’re not

Every vendor in this category leads with what they are. Here is the other half, so you don’t find it out in month three.

We are not the cheapest sticker price

There are processors who will quote you a lower headline number than we will. Ask them what the effective rate came to last month. That is the comparison that matters, and it is the one we are willing to have.

We are small

We’re a small team, not a call center. Someone still answers 24/7 on one number, and they can pull up your account. What we won’t promise is a tech at your door in two hours: a visit is the same business day when we can, the next business day when we can’t.

We only carry two systems

SpotOn and Square. There are a dozen others and some of them are good. If neither of ours is right for how your restaurant runs, we would rather say so during the teardown than sell you a system you fight for three years.

We can’t change interchange

Nobody can. It goes to the card networks and the issuing bank, and on the statement above it is the single biggest line. What we can do is show you everything stacked on top of it.

The ask

Send Statements.

At least your last three months, any processor. More is better. Processors change how they bill from month to month, and a few statements side by side show what you’re actually paying. We read every line and send you back the number, with every fee named.

  • We do the reading. It costs you nothing.
  • No signature and nothing to cancel
  • You keep the breakdown either way
  • If your deal is already good, we will say so

PDFs or photos of the pages. Up to 12 files, 50 MB in all. Black out the account numbers first.

No statements handy? Send the form anyway and we’ll reply with where to send them.
We do not want account numbers — black them out.
We don’t sell your statements. SpotOn or Square only see one when they need to approve your rate.

    Got them

We’ll read every line and get back to you with what you’re actually paying.

    See a demo

See the real system on a Zoom

Tell us when works. We’ll set up a Zoom and walk you through the real system, live on screen, and you can ask anything. No pressure.

    • The real system, not a mock-up
    • SpotOn or Square, whichever fits your room
    • Bring your questions about your own menu and floor

We’ll get back to you to set a time.
Nothing to sign, nothing to buy.

    Got it

We’ll be in touch to set up a time for the Zoom.

    Support

    Call or text us 24/7

One number for everything, calls and texts, day or night. Text if you’d rather not be on the phone.

    (888) 291-8918

    One number, any hour

Calls and texts go to the same number, 24 hours a day, weekends included.

    People who know your account

We’re a small team, not a call center. On weekdays you get the Plainspoken team. On weekends a backup service answers as Plainspoken, and every call still comes to us.

    What happens next

We pick up. If it can be fixed over the phone, we fix it then. If it needs a visit, we come out the same business day when we can, and the next business day when we can’t. If it can’t wait, we’ll get you working around it in the meantime, like sending tickets to another printer.
